Mets' Pete Alonso addresses contract uncertainty, wrist injury

New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso did well to offer no guarantees regarding his immediate or long-term futures on Monday night.

"I’ve been here, as a New York Met in the organization, since 2016 and they believed in me first and it’s really special," Alonso said about possibly testing free agency after the 2024 season during his latest Alonso Foundation event, per Robert Sanchez of SNY. "I love New York and right now, New York is home. I can’t predict the future but right now I love where I’m at and (the fans) are phenomenal and it’s such a great place to play. It’s really special."

Alonso is a two-time All-Star, a fan-favorite and a potential future club captain for his on-the-field contributions and his behind-the-scenes leadership. As noted by ESPN stats, the 28-year-old began Tuesday leading all of MLB with 22 home runs on the season, and he's first among National League players with 49 RBI.

Back in February, Alonso raised some eyebrows when he acknowledged he didn't know what his future holds beyond the fact that he's on track to enter his third year of arbitration following the ongoing campaign. In late January, insider Jon Morosi of MLB Network said that Alonso could put pen to paper on an eight-year deal worth around $200M if he signed an extension before this fall.

The biggest concern currently hovering over Alonso is the fact he's on the injured list with a bone bruise and sprained left wrist that could keep him out of action through at least the rest of June. He suggested the splint he sported on Monday night made the issue appear worse than it is.

"I feel great. I know it looks bad with the splint, but I’m feeling excellent so I’m gonna get back out there as soon as possible," Alonso explained. "That’s the number one goal. I want to be out there ASAP"

The Alonso-less 31-35 Mets sit in fourth place in the NL East standings and trail the first-place Atlanta Braves by nine games heading into Tuesday night's matchup against the 38-29 New York Yankees.
