Rangers Star Mentioned As 'Perfect Transaction' For Mets This Offseason
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets need to add to the starting rotation this offseason.

New York currently has Kodai Senga and Jose Quintana slotted in the rotation and will need to make a few additions this offseason. The Mets have plenty of work to do and new president of baseball operations David Stearns leading the organization. There are plenty of free-agent starters available and New York seemingly has been linked to each one in some capacity.

One player who would be the "perfect transaction" for the Mets this offseason would be former New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Texas Rangers lefty Jordan Montgomery, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

"A bare-bones rotation -- Kodai Senga and Jose Quintana are the only ones guaranteed spots at this point -- and shaky bullpen calls for someone who eats innings," Passan said. "And when an available pitcher not only does that with aplomb but also has proven he's equipped with the mettle to pitch in New York and the stuff to dominate in the postseason, that's the sort of free agent well worth nine figures. The perfect transaction: Sign free-agent left-hander Jordan Montgomery."

Montgomery is going to be one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason. The 30-year-old was stellar in 2023 with the Cardinals and Rangers. He began the season in St. Louis and was traded ahead of the deadline to the Rangers and helped lead the club to the World Series. Overall, Montgomery finished the season with a 3.20 ERA across 32 starts and 188 2/3 innings pitched.

New York has plenty of money to spend and could make a major splash or two this offseason.
