Robert Griffin III expands on scorching Caleb Williams, Bears take

ESPN analyst and free-agent quarterback Robert Griffin III raised eyebrows throughout the NFL community when he said earlier this week that USC Trojans star signal-caller Caleb Williams should "demand that the Chicago Bears do not draft him No. 1 overall."

Griffin elaborated on that scorching-hot take during the latest edition of his "RG3 and the Ones" podcast.

"He should tell the Bears he's not coming," Griffin said about Williams, as shared by Andrew Gould of The Spun. "Don't draft me."

Griffin went on to explain his reasoning.

"They've surrounded Caleb Williams with great talent, but what they don't have right now is stability in the front office," Griffin said about the Bears. "To me, they need to extend (head coach) Matt Eberflus, because he needs at least three-to-four years to build and grow with Caleb Williams."

For what it's worth, former quarterback and current NFL analyst Ryan Leaf is among those who believe Williams needs to sit and learn for at least a portion of his rookie season. There's no sign the Bears plan to go down that route after they traded Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers late last week.

"So if the Bears believe in Matt Eberflus, they should extend him," Griffin continued. "Because that's the best thing for the entire organization. If they don't believe in Matt Eberflus, they should have fired him as soon as they knew they were going to go with a rookie quarterback."

Whatever anybody feels about Griffin's comments, such words likely will mean little in the long run.

Bears insider Josh Schrock of NBC Sports Chicago mentioned how Williams referred to the club as "here" while speaking on NFL+ shortly after the quarterback threw at USC's pro day earlier this week. For a piece published Friday, Adam Jahns of The Athletic detailed how Williams "continues to check the 'person' boxes for the Bears" ahead of the draft that opens on the night of April 25.

At this point, one would have to search to find a reputable mock draft predicting any outcome other than the Bears taking Williams first overall. The fact Chicago traded Fields over a month before the start of the draft suggests rumblings about the club not wanting the two quarterbacks to share a locker room for any amount of time were, in fact, accurate.
